In 1959
at the age of 10 during a grammar school tour of WKEU Radio in
Griffin Georgia, a world of wonder and fascination was opened
for Barry that he would never be able to shake. Radio was all
he was interested in after that. In 1965 first words were spoken
on the air as he read the obituaries for a local funeral home.
The program was not what he had in mind at age 16, but it was
a start. By 1972 with most of his ducks finally together, if not
in a row, he had the opportunity to manage his first station.
In 1981 WWEV began testing on 91.5 FM. They were sending out a tone; just a steady sometimes variable tone. No one paid much attention to it. No one except Barry who heard the test tone one evening while scanning the dial and knew what it meant; a new station was coming on the air and the signal was nearby. He made note of the frequency and came back to it again and again. He said he couldnt get away from it. Like the light from a lighthouse guiding a lost ship to safety, it drew him like a beacon. Later, Barry would use that experience to reach out to listeners, designating WWEV as a Lighthouse on the shore of troubled water. "Shining the Light."
WWEV went on the air in December of that year. They were still in a formative stage however, with no live programming. After listening to the station as it went through the technical growth stage, and at the Lords leading, Barry decided to call and see if there was place for him. It was as though they were waiting for his call. Yes, there is a need here for someone with experience and a background in radio management, was the response, "Our board of directors has been interviewing for several weeks." Barry called the person he was directed to and made an appointment for a board interview. After all the applicants were considered the choice was made, Barry Holt would now lead WWEV. God had been preparing him since childhood for the challenges ahead.
It has
been 40 years since the 5th grade class tour that planted the
seed in Barry's heart. It is exciting to see what God does with
seeds. This one fell on Good Ground.
"I
believe that God has a place for all of us. He can use the talents,
experience and desires of His children to accomplish much in this
world for Christ. Take what God has given you and dedicate it
to His service. Then, be ready to respond when the Lord calls
you into action. Believe me, if you are a ready and willing vessel,
He will call." bh
Barry and his wife
