I Love to get your feedback on the articles I write each month. One reader recently wrote she thought that I "always put an interesting spin" on the things I write about. I think the comment was complimentary. The spin, I hope, is understood as an attempt on my part to connect everyday life with scriptural principles. Jesus was the best I know at doing that. His parables were some of His best teachings I think.
So with that said, let's see what we can "spin" this month.
As a radio station we worship the Lord with music. The WWEV music is a blend of contemporary, praise and worship, and even a smattering of Christian Rock once a week. All our music tells a story or presents an idea or concept based on scripture.
Music gets in the heart and plants seeds that flourish into a bumper crop of good things if the music is good. Christian music also can set the tone or mood for worship. Music transcends denominational barriers too. Amazing Grace, for example, is sung and played by every Christian denomination I know of. Music is one thing that we can use as a basis for common ground; something we can agree on together as a Christian body of believers.
With each generation there is an accompanying music period that reflects the generation.
The music of the 60s differs from the 70s or 80s and certainly the 90s. If you grew up in the 60s, as I did, there is a commonality that I share with you without having met you. Because the music we shared together is a catalyst for understanding.
We do an oldies program called "Back Tracks" on Saturday night which explores the Christian music from past generations. Each week we hear from listeners who reminisce about the days and years when these songs were popular. The music is remembered and helps to catalog other events taking place when the songs were popular.
God is the same yesterday, today and forever yet music thought to be unacceptable 30 years ago is now acceptable. If God doesn't change, it is obvious that our definition of "acceptable" does. I don't think God cares about music style at all. He cares about us and wants us to care about Him.
Recently my year old granddaughter, Bailey, picked up the drum sticks at church and started tapping on the different drums. The beat was a little off tempo but it was music to me. I praised her for what she had done and she was so happy that she had pleased me she played another verse.
The Bible says to make a "joyful noise" unto the Lord. I believe that God cares not whether we sing on key or play the piano like Dino so long as we Praise Him and Worship Him.
